About

Romeo Wecks, born in Berlin in 1994, studied composition at the University of Music “Franz Liszt” in Weimar with Prof. Michael Obst, Dr. Ulrich Kreppein, and Prof. Reinhard Wolschina. He completed postgraduate studies (Konzertexamen) in composition at the University of Music Würzburg under Prof. Robert HP Platz, where he also received instruction in ensemble conducting with a focus on contemporary music, as well as in electronic composition with Prof. Annesley Black. In 2023, he graduated magna cum laude.

His music unfolds in open, associative sonic spaces — not bound to a fixed aesthetic, but arising from movement, natural phenomena, or existential inquiry. At the core of his work lies the tension between structure and dissolution, concentration and openness. Elements of serial technique, spectral approaches, and spatial concepts enter into dialogue with self-developed tonal systems.

His works have been performed at festivals such as the Weimar Spring Days for Contemporary Music, the Würzburg Days of New Music, the IMPULS Festival Saxony-Anhalt, and B-Classic in Belgium, among others.

He has received numerous awards, including First Prize at the Sondershausen Composition Competition (2018 and 2021), the Joseph Reinl Prize, Third Prize (Vienna, 2018), the KWIDZYN Classical Music Award (Poland, 2020), and the Composition Prize of the Kammermusik! Festival Würzburg (2022). In 2024/25, he held a working grant at Künstlerhof Schreyahn (Lower Saxony).

In summer 2025, he was selected as the sole German participant in the International Gugak Workshop at the National Gugak Center in Seoul, where he engaged intensively with traditional Korean music.

Romeo Wecks works as a freelance composer and pianist. He has been a regular voting member of GEMA since 2024.
